The National Old-timer Day has been the place for keeping our driving heritage visible for more than 30 years (the 35th edition is expected in 2019). With 400 vintage cars per year, this is the largest free event in this area in the Netherlands. In 2016, the National Old-timer Day was recognized by UNESCO in the context of the World Motor Heritage Year as one of the top events in this area worldwide. The national Old-timer Day has become an institution in is therefore living proof of intangible cultural heritage in Flevoland.
There is a club of more than 40 volunteers, some of whom have been responsible for the development and progress of this event for several decades. In addition, of course, it cannot exist without the hundreds of participants who year after year express their love and passion and the many thousands of visitors.
The event started in 1983 as a small-scale presentation of historic cars with 30 participants. Visitors from that time were car enthusiasts, day tourists and shoppers. Now the National Old-timer Day attracts visitors (around 25,000) from all over the country, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and England. Again many interested car enthusiasts, car spotters (photographers), car journalists, collectors, collectors of information about historic cars, amazed viewers. The cars are subdivided into age categories as used by FIVA and FEHAC. Accents are placed on designs from the 20s and 30s of the last century and designs from immediately after the end of the Second World War. An expert jury assesses the state of originality and at the end of the day chooses winners per age class and chooses 'The Best of the Show'.
