The Netherlands signed the UNESCO convention in 2012. As a result, scientific research in the Netherlands is only at the beginning, with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science commissioning knowledge institute VIE (the Netherlands Center for Popular Culture and Intangible Heritage) to coordinate 'independent knowledge development'. and stimulate. VIE has already organized several network meetings with universities and research institutions to collaborate on a research agenda on intangible heritage.

Scientific research and reflection on intangible heritage practice is important for VIE to be able to do its job effectively in supporting the communities and making the intangible heritage visible through, among other things, the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Netherlands. Based on a discussion of the research that has been carried out so far internationally, VIE wants to map out the relevant research questions from practice in the overview below, in order to develop a research agenda together with others.
