Description

An Veghel Krol is a soft white bun containing a lot of aniseed. The bun is braided by hand into a knot. It is regarded as a regional product in parts of East Brabant. The krol is eaten with butter and speculaas and is especially popular around Sinterklaas.

The name anijskrol ('krol' in the Brabant dialect) is a corruption of 'curl'. It refers to the curl that arises when the dough is knotted. The real aniseed roll is recognizable by this hand-braided curl. The first rolls were baked in 1865.
